Lily Goode expected her mother's inheritance to be disappointing. He writes them down. He is infuriating in a way that is extremely inconvenient given that Lily needs to keep her head clear long enough to figure out if she can afford to fix this place or sell it.
Then the accidents start. Too many, too targeted, too conveniently timed to be ordinary bad luck. The town has blamed the Goode family for every misfortune in Lucky Valley for generations. Someone in it wants to keep it that way. Meanwhile the gnomes keep moving when no one is watching, Polly keeps insisting Lily is a witch, and Lily's hands keep doing things she cannot explain.
